Anyone who has made a major purchase knows the sense of pride, accomplishment and satisfaction that comes with it. They also know the importance of complete peace of mind that they have made the right choice. But how do you know you have made the right choice? Well, there are a few things to look for in a company to know that you are dealing with professionals, professionals who provide value and quality and will stand behind their products.
First, look for an established provider with a reputation that precedes them. Any business that has been operating professionally for any period will have a host of satisfied customers singing their praises.
Second, choose a provider who has local stores that you can walk into and see the product for yourself and access professional support when and if required. This doesn’t just ensure that you know where to access help and support if you need it, it means that you know that you are dealing with real people who can understand your needs and not just be a faceless customer number over the phone.
Third, look for a provider who provides a warranty that goes beyond the requirements of consumer law guarantees. Many companies advertise their return and repair policies like they are offering something unique or extra value when in reality they’re offering only what is required by law. But a company that is confident in its products and services and the quality and workmanship of its tradespeople and suppliers will offer a real warranty that goes beyond its competition.
Consumer guarantees and warranties are not the same things, though some retailers will use the terms interchangeably. Consumer guarantees are provided in Australia by law and are irrevocable, warranties are separate promises or agreements made by a seller.
Consumer guarantees apply in Australia to products and services sold or supplied for ordinary private or domestic use. It may also apply to businesses, provided the cost is below $100,000 and the product or services is not on-sold or used in creating the products or services of the business. These guarantees are covered under Australian Consumer Law (ACL) and cannot be limited or refused by the business.
ACL protections apply to all products sold in Australia, including Australian websites, even if they are shipped from overseas. Unfortunately, it is notoriously difficult to hold foreign entities to account for products that fail to meet expectations under consumer law protections. This is one of the main reasons that it is important to shop local, or at least purchase from companies that have physical, staffed offices within Australia that consumers can walk into.
ACL provisions apply to gifts provided by a business to their customers as well as to purchased products.
A more detailed explanation of ACL and consumer rights provided under the legislation is available from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). Consumer rights and protections also vary from state to state and your rights in your state may vary from those stated above.
In contrast to consumer guarantees, warranties are additional promises of service or repairs made by a seller to a consumer. Warranties apply in addition to consumer law protections and do not replace them. Warranties must be honoured and this is protected under consumer law. Businesses cannot pressure customers to purchase an extended warranty and must be transparent regarding what is covered and what is not covered under a warranty agreement.
